My ongoing series COURTS has been featured by NOICE Magazine in a dedicated online presentation of seven photographs from the project.
NOICE is an independent photography platform centred on close observation of everyday life, with a particular interest in images that find beauty, humour and visual surprise within apparently ordinary situations. Its emphasis on observation rather than constructed spectacle makes it a particularly natural context for the series.
COURTS began during the years I lived and taught in Hong Kong, where public basketball courts appeared repeatedly across the urban landscape: beside schools, between housing towers, on rooftops and within residential estates. What initially drew me was not the game itself, but the visual structure of these spaces. Painted circles, lines and rectangles turn functional sporting environments into compositions of colour, geometry and repetition.
The NOICE feature presents seven photographs alongside a project text examining the courts as both designed systems and lived public spaces. By isolating fragments and photographing them largely when play has stopped, the work moves between documentation and abstraction, using a recurring piece of everyday infrastructure as a way of looking at Hong Kong beyond its familiar landmarks.
The feature also includes a short photographer profile, where I name the Yashica LM Mat as a favourite camera and Jeff Wall as a favourite photographer.
