Colour Divides Featured in The Guardian’s Best Phone Picture Series

Colour Divides was featured in The Guardian as part of its Best Phone Picture series, exploring the story behind the photograph and the circumstances in which it was made.
The article traces the image back to an afternoon spent walking through Cape Town’s historic Bo-Kaap neighbourhood. A blue Ford Cortina appeared against vivid green and pink facades, creating a composition in which colour, architecture and chance briefly fell into place.
The conversation also considers what lies beyond the photograph’s formal appeal. Moving later that day from Bo-Kaap to the more affluent V&A Waterfront brought the social and spatial divisions of Cape Town into sharper focus, giving the title Colour Divides another layer beyond the literal blocks of colour visible within the frame.
The photograph was made on a Google Pixel 6, reinforcing an important part of my wider practice: the belief that the significance of a photograph should not be determined by the status or cost of the device used to make it.
