Colour Divides has been named an Official Selection in the 23rd International Photography Awards.
The selected image was photographed in Cape Town’s historic Bo-Kaap neighbourhood and continues an ongoing interest in the way colour, architecture and ordinary objects can transform our reading of an everyday environment.
A blue Ford Cortina sits between vivid pink and green houses, where colour, geometry and chance briefly align. Beyond its immediate visual structure, the photograph draws on the layered histories of Bo-Kaap and South Africa more widely, using colour as both a formal device and a way of thinking about identity, ownership, separation and belonging.
Made spontaneously on a Google Pixel 6, the photograph also reflects a wider interest in challenging inherited assumptions about which photographic tools and images are granted legitimacy within contemporary photography.
