Spirit of Place: SOUTH AFRICA

£20.00

South Africa is a land of contrasts and stories, where landscapes and lives weave together in a tapestry of wonder. In this first journey, I wandered from Mbombela, the capital of Mpumalanga Province, through the wild heart of Kruger, to the shores and slopes of Cape Town.

In Mbombela, gateway to the Kruger National Park, the rhythms of daily life echo through a region once shaped by trade routes and gold prospectors, now thriving as a vibrant crossroads of culture. Beyond it lies the vastness of the Kruger, where ancient wilderness breathes through the herds and predators that have roamed freely for millennia, reminding us of the fragile balance between humanity and nature. Far to the south, Cape Town rises between ocean and mountain, its history etched in the stones of Robben Island and the shadows of Table Mountain, a city of resilience and beauty.

What follows is only a glimpse, a first step into a country too vast and magical to be contained in a single journey. Yet within these pages I have tried to hold a fragment of its essence - its spirit, its light, its living pulse.

A6 (10.5 x 14.8 cm) Book, 83 pages.

About the project: Spirit of Place

Presented as a series of A6 travel sized books, each devoted to a single place, the project takes on a tactile, relic like quality. Spirit of Place continues Robby’s practice of privileging attention over spectacle and subtlety over declaration. Resisting the conventions of travel literature and guidebooks, which so often rely on narration and definition, the project treats photography as a primary mode of encounter—a way of engaging with place that allows atmosphere, rhythm, and texture to speak more eloquently than words.

The title draws on the ancient idea that every landscape possesses its own genius loci, or spirit—an essence sensed rather than explained. In these works, the camera lingers with fleeting impressions and overlooked details, framing travel not as description but as experience, inviting the viewer to discover their own meaning in what emerges.
