Winner, 2026 Sony World Photography Awards, Open Competition, Object
Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, South Africa, 2025

Colour Divides was made in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, where a blue Ford Cortina passes between vivid planes of green and pink. The photograph brings together colour, architecture and an unplanned moment in the street, creating a composition that feels almost constructed despite nothing having been staged.

The work also reflects the particular visual and cultural history of Bo-Kaap, where colour has become closely associated with place, identity and belonging. Rather than treating the painted architecture simply as a backdrop, the photograph considers how colour can divide, connect and reorganise the spaces through which we move.

Colour Divides was also selected in the 23rd International Photography Awards, shortlisted in the Benjamin Hall Photography Award, shortlisted in the National Geographic Traveller Awards Urban category, shortlisted in the URBAN Photography Awards, and recognised in the Minimalist Photography Awards.

This unique 1/1 artwork was exhibited at Somerset House, London, as part of the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, and later at Saatchi Gallery, London, as part of Spotlight: Digitalism in September 2026.

Other print versions of Colour Divides have also been exhibited within the Sony World Photography Awards travelling exhibition programme, including presentations in Milan, Tokyo, Arles and Berlin.
