The Veil Breathes at the Royal Scottish Academy

5 December 2025–2 January 2026 · Exhibition · Royal Scottish Academy, Edinburgh · The Veil Breathes

The Veil Breathes, from my series Intervals, was selected for The Thread That Pulls, Visual Arts Scotland’s major open exhibition at the Royal Scottish Academy building in Edinburgh.

The exhibition centred on sustained attention: the ideas, materials and recurring subjects artists repeatedly return to, and the value of slow looking within a culture increasingly shaped by distraction.

The Veil Breathes forms part of Intervals, a photographic project concerned with pauses, thresholds and moments of suspension. Across the series, everyday environments are removed from their immediate function and allowed to become quieter and less certain.

Rather than approaching place as a passive backdrop, Intervals considers how environments can shape feeling and perception, and how attentive looking can reveal moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed.

Showing the work within The Thread That Pulls felt particularly appropriate. Intervals itself emerged from sustained observation and from returning repeatedly to those brief moments when the ordinary appears to pause.
