Colour Divides at the Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, Somerset House

Following its win in the Open Competition, Colour Divides was exhibited at Somerset House as part of the 2026 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition.
The annual exhibition brought together winning and shortlisted photography from across the Professional, Open, Student and Youth competitions, presenting work from photographers around the world throughout the galleries of Somerset House.
Photographed spontaneously on a Google Pixel 6 in Bo-Kaap, Cape Town, Colour Divides places a blue Ford Cortina against sharply divided pink and green facades.
The image began as an instinctive response to colour, geometry and chance, but its title also references South Africa’s layered histories of division, identity and belonging. Bo-Kaap’s houses were historically painted white, while their later transformation through vivid colour became associated with expressions of freedom, identity and ownership after emancipation.
Its inclusion in one of photography’s major international exhibitions was particularly meaningful given that the work was made using a mobile phone, a tool that remains central to my practice because of its immediacy and its ability to challenge conventional hierarchies surrounding photographic equipment.
