Stranger Than Fiction Published in Ephemere's Color of Noise

Stranger Than Fiction, from my ongoing project The Visible Unknown, has been published in Color of Noise, a new photobook by Tokyo-based independent photography platform Ephemere.
Curated and published by Anne Murayama, with art direction and book design by Yuri Inoue, the 150-page publication brings together 100 photographers exploring the psychological and sensory possibilities of colour. Ephemere describes the project as an investigation into colour as a kind of visual frequency: something capable of lingering, unsettling or producing an emotional response beyond straightforward description. My selected work, Stranger Than Fiction, comes from The Visible Unknown. The photograph shows the spines of fiction novels deliberately photographed out of focus until language and recognisable form begin to dissolve into bands of colour and atmosphere. What should be immediately readable becomes unstable, shifting the image towards the uncertain territory between seeing, recognising and knowing.
That relationship between colour and perceptual uncertainty made the work particularly suited to Color of Noise, while also extending the wider project's enquiry into what happens when photography relinquishes complete visual clarity.
The publication was officially launched in Kyoto in May 2026.
